Pat McGrew, Director | Keypoint Intelligence | InfoTrends Production Workflow Service
The infrastructure to every production print environment is workflow. From getting the job onboard to delivering it to the client or mailstream, workflow makes or breaks profitability. When you add new equipment, like cut-sheet or roll-fed inkjet devices, devices with additional colors, new post-print options, and new finishing lines, the work still flows, but it usually needs a tune-up to keep profitability levels and turnaround times at their highest levels.By the end of this presentation, you will have the tools to evaluate your workflow against the market. We will look at the latest results from our North American Software Investment Survey so you can compare your spending against your peers. We will look at the best practices in workflow to support multi-technology environments so that you can compare your workflow against some benchmarks. And finally, we will offer some options for workflows that work in multi-technology environments.

1:00pm – 2:00pm “Caution Ahead – The Hidden Challenges of Keeping Workflow Software and Finishing Equipment Up to Date”
Marco Boer, I.T. Strategies
Workflow and finishing are the only two things that will truly differentiate own IJ production print shop from another. The challenge is that both can be more costly than even the investment in the inkjet press. The decision matrix on workflow software is a complicated one: off-the-shelf, semi-custom, or fully custom? There are advantages and disadvantages to all – but the key to watch is the ability for the repeatability of customer programs and the hidden long-term costs of keeping workflow software up to date.On the finishing side, there is perhaps less control for ING members than workflow. To fully leverage the benefits of inkjet production printing, finishing needs to be automated as well. Traditional finishing equipment vendors are challenged with more requirements than ever before, perhaps even beyond their resources to control. We’ll soon be facing higher ink coverage on a much greater range of substrates – will that output be dry enough to finish, etc.?
